DREAMS TO REALITY 2020-2021

My name is Mensah Faith Tegomoh. I am a young Cameroonian aged, 26 with a BSc. Degree in  Nursing Sciences from Saint Louis University of Health and Biomedical Sciences.

In my experience as a young Nursing student and a regular volunteer with local organizations dedicated to helping vulnerable population like pregnant women, patients, and orphans, During internships and voluntary service, I have been torn by the alarming increase in the number of deaths in my community and at hospitals over the last few years. Sadly, children are among the most affected.
Children are special gifts from God who tasks us with nurturing and protecting them through and beyond their early stages in life. They are most vulnerable from the onset of pregnancy until the age of 5 and require so much care and support to ensure they thrive. When this care is absent or neglected, the results are often catastrophic.
Upon getting into further research, I discovered a 2019 UNICEF report which showed that more than 7 out of 100 children born in Cameroon die before the age of 5. I was also disturbed finding out that over 4500 women across the country die every year from childbirth. These deaths are largely due to little or no income and limited access to quality health care. The four-year-old Anglophone crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation in the North West Region, and Bamenda, in particular, with an increasingly vulnerable population of internally displaced families.

As we were taught in Nursing school, it is proven that attending 4 or more Antenatal Clinic (ANC) effectively reduces the risks of mother and child mortality.

Mothers dying and leaving their newborns and other socio-economic problems have led to orphanages being overcrowded and incapable of providing them with the essential care they need.

All these greatly inspired the 2020 theme of CEPOW CMR & FAIBATEK’s annual DREAMS TO REALITY outreach program which is “STANDING TOGETHER AND CREATING SPECIAL MEMORIES”!
