All EHN volunteers sleep with a local family in a home stay.

The families all live close to the school and will provide at least two meals a day plus soft drinks. Nepali families are extremely hospitable and take really good care of volunteers.

Staying with Nepali families will give you a real feel for rural Nepali village life.

Conditions are pretty basic: there is no hot water or washing machine, WiFi if scarce or non-existent at times and meals consist of simple rice and vegetables.

Nepali families tend to sleep early and wake early, so when living in a small house with a Nepali family you should be prepared for some early mornings.

Most home stays have some animals by the house for milk, eggs and meat so if you have any allergies to animals please take the required medicines as well as vaccinations.

The main dietary components in all Nepali meals are rice and vegetables, which are called “Dal Bhat” – Dal means lentil soup and Bhat means cooked rice.

Non-vegetarians can also have meat on some days. Other typical components are green leaves such as spinach and Doi which is Nepali curd or natural yogurt.

If you are a Vegetarian please make sure to let us know as well as the family you will be staying with; it is no problem at all since in Nepal there are many Vegetarians due to the religion.

Typical Day

Volunteers will be teaching children ranging from 3 to 16 yrs old at a rural village government school. Our volunteers teach English and Computing (if you have good knowledge of Math and Science you are welcome to teach that as well).

We also ask that volunteers try to plan a couple of fun lessons to run while at the school such as art, music or sports. Previous volunteers have arranged many different things like sports days, health education camps, women empowerment sessions for girls only, paper butterfly workshops, kite building and a quiz day with prizes.

Here’s what a typical day looks like for our volunteers:

Early morning: Breakfast at the volunteer's homestay

10am - 4 pm: Volunteers teach at the school. Volunteers can work alone or in groups of 2 or 3 per class.

School teaching days are Monday through Friday, and on the weekends volunteers are free to travel and tour the area.

Local Excursions and Sightseeing

The first day in Kathmandu is dedicated to orientation and a tour of the city, which is a great way to start off before heading out to the village.

Our fee also includes 3 nights in Kathmandu at a guesthouse (plus breakfast), and a Kathmandu city tour.

Apart from the city tour which is included in our fee and itinerary, we are always happy to help our volunteers book treks, safaris, rafting and paragliding expeditions with local and reliable operators we know (at an additional cost).

Support and emergency assistance:

All home stays have the EHN staff numbers and will contact our staff in the event of an accident or illness.

If a volunteer requires medical assistance, either the local family will get a car or truck to take him/her to hospital, or in more serious cases we will get a helicopter to collect the volunteer and take him/her to one of the hospitals in Pokhara (45 mins by road/5 mins by helicopter from the village).

The main hospitals in Pokhara are CIWEC and Manipal.

In very serious cases a helicopter will take the volunteer directly to Kathmandu.
