What We Need

Our work in Samana is focusing on defending children rights, promoting cultural exchange and sustainable, ecological tourism. We are mainly concerned with the plight of vulnerable children from disadvantaged backgrounds. With our Youth Care & Community Program we aim to empower young people by offering them additional educational opportunities and tutoring classes, as well as supporting and educating parents. With the help of local professionals we started the first ever educational and therapeutic initiative for children with special needs in Samana. We are offering computer literacy classes, English classes and environmental awareness programs for the locals and our volunteers are working in several projects in a hospital, in a dental clinic, on an animal farm, in the NGO management and Multimedia project and many more. We are run exclusively by the efforts and through the creativity of our Volunteers and Interns.

We offer the following volunteer and internship possibilities in the Dominican Republic:
Youthcare & Community: Teach children with or without special needs in a local school with the Montessori concept. Aldeas de Paz offers free and popular beginner and advanced English, PC and German classes to locals.
Diving & Marine Conservation: Plant trees or learn to dive and kill Lionfish for maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
Animal Farm Maintenance: Look after neglected street dogs and get to know life on a farm for pigs, horses and donkeys from the ecologist Kim Bedall.
Medicine & Healthcare: Observe and assist in the public hospital of a development country. Depending on your skills, knowledge and interest, you can assist in the emergency hospitalisation, surgery, HIV-department or the laboratory. There are internships especially designed for professionals and dentistry students.
NGO Management: Learn how to run an NGO. Develop new strategies and structures. Shadow the coordinator. Create or translate short papers. Keep in close contact with agencies around the world and local partners. Help in fundraising activities.
Social Multimedia Journalism: Promote our mission on a tight budget, develop social media strategies, film and take photos.
Early Childhood Education & Development: Have an opportunity to make an important difference in the lives of children.

You can choose where you want to live. We offer double rooms as well as single rooms at one of our fully equipped guesthouse apartments. You can also decide to stay with a host family, including a private bedroom and two meals per day. The difference is the required financial contribution. The shown price is for a double room, for the rest the donation will be a bit higher. The extra money you pay when you stay with a host family goes directly to the family.

Financial Contribution & Benefits
Aldeas de Paz works hard to keep the required financial contribution to an absolute minimum and to offer financial transparency by practicing an open book policy. The calculation of your financial contribution or donation is set up so that the longer you stay the less you give per week. We do this to encourage longer stays, recognizing that longer stays lead to more significant volunteer work and more energy contributed in the form of donated time in place of money! The minimum contribution starts at €175 per week and includes Spanish language classes, double room at one of our fully equipped guesthouse apartments, a special program donation as well as a personal welcome service and pick-up at the airport, transfer to the bus, bus fare and free transfer to your placement location in Las Terrenas or Samana. If you wish a single room upgrade add €40 per week and an all in Host Family homestay upgrade is €145 per week, including a private bedroom and two meals per day. For an independent fully equipped Bungalow or one-room apartment add €75 per week (only available in Las Terrenas) For more information about costs and benefits check out our webpage .

Aldeas de Paz is a sustainable and transparent grass-roots NGO based in Santa Barbara de Samaná and Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic. We are independent from political, religious or business interests and maintain independence by completely funding and operating our programs with the practical and monetary contributions of volunteers and interns.

We are a youth oriented organization with the purpose of educating, mentoring, inspiring and empowering young people. We aim to develop their potentials and help them to create opportunities for them and their community through our educational programs and recreational activities. We promote children rights and equal opportunities for all.

We promote a Culture of Peace through enriching cross-cultural exchange for people of all cultural backgrounds and nationalities and we practice voluntary community service where we provide additional opportunities in education, sports, health care and skill training. We assist our beneficiaries in developing their potential and improving their own lives.

Offering volunteers and interns the great opportunity to work side by side with locals, learn new skills, study Spanish and immerse themselves in the Latin and Caribbean culture. We share the values of peace, justice and tolerance, fundamentally focusing on the preservation of cultural values and the empowerment of young people while valuing local knowledge and working with cultural sensitivity. Our volunteer opportunities are truly the microcosm of a world where people join together giving priority to improving life for humanity and promoting a Culture of Peace as a practical way to both prevent and resolve conflict.
