Chengdu Urban Rivers Association (CURA) is an private social organization dedicated to protecting the rivers and teaching about environmental issues. We are a full time staff of between 5 to 10 with many volunteers. 志愿者必须说中国话。
CURA, established in 2003, has done many kinds of project but all of our projects are focused on environmental issues, especially pertaining to protecting rivers. For instance: An Environmental Law project that made a video to educate people on the new environmental laws. Environmental pollution testing combined with a health care survey to look for correlations between chemical pollution and health. We put on two main conferences a year pertaining to reviewing river health.
We hold a monthly bicycle ride (40k each way) to Anlong Village where we have our long term project that has farmers growing organically, the installation of constructed wetlands, installation of urine-diverting composting toilets, bio-gas digesters and environmental education. We also write policy papers for government. In the past CURA has stopped the construction of 10 dams.
We often take schools and international groups to visit Anlong for education and just to look at how the project operates.
We function as a family and eat lunch together in our office thanks to our cook who received organic produce from Anlong and prepares delicious meals for us.
Our volunteers come from the local area, China as well as internationally. We have to require that volunteers speak Chinese. 志愿者必须说中国话。
