What We Need

We want you to help our students, aged 7 - 17 years, to improve their spoken English skills; since they don't get a chance to speak English at home or in school. You will be asked to run classes in which you practice speaking with the students, helping them to be more fluent and comfortable in English conversations. You don't have to teach grammar in the class since we do it. Helping the students to improve their speaking ability will be hugely beneficial. There is also a need for volunteers who can work with our teachers, helping them to strengthen their English skills, plan lessons and games for the students and organize and create more teaching materials.

We also need volunteers who can help with computer literacy; our students are learning basic computing skills, including creating PowerPoint presentations, researching topics using the web, and basic programming (prior volunteers have helped teach Hour of Code, BlocklyDuino, Arduino, and robotics). If you have experience teaching more advanced tech skills, there are always some senior students who are eager to learn and ready for new challenges.

You will have to help only a few hours per week, the longest day will be Saturday where you will have a class to teach for a morning and can help out with other activities after lunch, during the week you will be expected to run some staff classes and commit two hours a day for homeschooling (with days off that you choose.)

Our school runs afterschool and on weekends, primarily it is a Saturday school, so you must be able to work on Saturdays. Your hours would be something like this:
Saturday - 8 AM to 8 PM
Sunday - 2 PM to 4 PM
Tuesday - 2 PM to 4 PM
Thursday - 2 PM to 4 PM

On special holidays you will be able to join our elder students in outdoor activities such as
visiting beaches, playing Cricket, Volleyball, Netball, etc.
Every volunteer will be provided 2 or 3 trips to beaches or waterfalls and assistance will be given for you to visit other tourist destinations.

Welcome To LakAruna Foundation

Hingurukaduwa is a beautiful small village situated in the eastern foothills of the Namunukula mountain range in Uva province of Sri Lanka. LakAruna was formed in 2002 with the main objective of introducing computer technology to the people of this village as a means of acquiring education and knowledge to improve their ways of living. From a single computer with no internet connection and a bunch of curious little faces flocking around it, who have never seen a computer before in their lives, we have come a long way, overcoming many challenges along the way.

Our web site showcases how effectively these children from a rural setting have taken up the challenges in embracing new technology. Especially English not being the native language, students had to put special emphasis on English education, which they did successfully. Overall, the English knowledge of the student members has increased to a level not seen in this village before. Today our organization is assisting students with their math & science education as well. We hope to introduce e-leaning techniques to further enhance this process.

Our vision for the future is to further evolve our ICT education program around marketable skills while introducing a new sustainable employment model for the qualified students who do not manage to secure a place in a University. We think creating IT related employment in a rural village like ours would be an immense strength to the economy of the village as well as the future IT education of the younger generation.

There were many individuals and organizations that helped us in this difficult journey and if not for their support we would not have achieved our goals today. We sincerely thank all our well-wishers for their kind support and encouragement. We hope we will continue to get your support in future.
