Oasis Mathare (OM) is a community-based organisation that empowers marginalised youths and children from the Mathare slums in Nairobi, Kenya. We provide a library service, where children can come and do their studies away from home, where they face challenges such as lack of electricity. Our centre acts as a space where youths and women can learn ICT and practical entrepreneurial skills for sustainable living. Inside is also a toy centre, where children are able to come and play with toys designed for early childhood.

One of the great contributions to the huge poverty level in Mathare is the high unemployment rate, which is fed by the high illiteracy level. Most of the youth in Mathare do not complete their formal education, whereas the majority of those who do graduate do not pass at a high level. This is due to the challenges that they face while learning, such as frequent interruptions, lack of funds, lack of learning materials and quiet places to study, and a lack of mentorship and entrepreneurial skills. OM provides practical solutions to help reduce illiteracy and poverty in Mathare, using different approaches all based on a deep understanding of the challenges that affect youths and women in Mathare.
