Step Up provides educational enrichment and social development programs that go beyond the classroom and empower vulnerable children to thrive from childhood to adulthood.
Global Education Volunteers (GEVs) with a passion for working with children are needed to bring their unique skills to help Step Up with a diverse range of program activities: English language instruction, computers, health and wellness, art, music, sports, photography, STEAM (science, technology, art, English and math) activities, and more. We place a strong emphasis on social-emotional development programming and volunteers will also have opportunities to lead activities that cultivate teamwork, creative thinking, leadership, and communication skills. Our programming is based on experiential learning where our children develop confidence, resilience, and self-reliance by actively engaging in all activities. Volunteers can also support design, assessment, fundraising, and marketing activities.
Our energetic, passionate volunteers come from all over the world working directly with our kids, local staff, caregivers, and local stakeholders. We welcome unique cultural perspectives, creative ideas, and entrepreneurial thinking that leaves a lasting impact on our achievers and local staff. If you believe in education as a key to the wellbeing of children, we would love to hear from you!
Volunteers will be provided with furnished accommodation that includes electricity, water, and kitchen, and accompanied transportation to and from the airport in Gaborone, Botswana, which is about 50km/30 miles from our center in Molepolole. The accommodation in Molepolole is within walking distance to the Step Up center.
The cost to volunteer is $1,000 per month, which can be made as a tax-deductible contribution. This cost includes furnished accommodation, transportation to and from the airport, and supports Step Up programming expenses.
At a minimum, volunteers can expect to budget $100-$200 per month for food, transport to Gaborone for entertainment, phone airtime, and other miscellaneous personal expenses.
Laptops/tablets, craft supplies (markers, colored pencils, colored paper, etc…), notebooks, children’s books for ages 10-18 years old, dictionaries, pens and pencils, pencil sharpeners.
Step Up addresses a striking educational gap in Botswana – the lack of access to out-of-school enrichment programs and experiential learning activities essential to the positive social-emotional development of young people. Through our ACCESS Education Initiative (AEI), Step Up provides access to opportunities they would otherwise not have access to - mentoring, academic tutoring, library books, English language support, music, arts, sports, STEM programs, computer classes, life skills activities, educational field trips, games, and more.
The Step Up center provides a safe, productive space for children to go after school and during school breaks, a time they would otherwise have nothing to do and nowhere to go. Our model puts the child at the center of everything we do and our programs are designed to help our achievers develop confidence, resilience and self-reliance, so that birthplace doesn’t have to determine their future.
