Talking Through Art (TTA) is a unique art-based NGO based in Kigali, Rwanda. It was founded in February 2015 by Petr Kočnar from the Czech Republic. The organization targets individuals with physical disabilities from low socioeconomic communities and works to create art-focused employment opportunities. TTA also teaches life skills and provides art and theater therapy in an effort to build confidence and strengthen self-esteem. Prior to joining TTA, members with physical disabilities struggled to make ends meet. Today, Talking Through Art consists of 9 members who create traditional Rwandan handicrafts as an income generating activity. The members are paid by the organization for the crafts that they make and the products are then sold both locally and in the Czech Republic. The profits support the NGO’s facilities, cover the members’ transportation fees, and pay for the raw materials used for the crafts. TTA also works to identify sponsors to pay the school fees for the members’ children. All the members’ children are currently enrolled in schools. TTA also provides physiotherapy and identify sponsors to cover prosthesis for those in need of replacement.
