You should definitely volunteer here!

My husband Robert and I spent two wonderful weeks volunteering at KNGO. The director, Saveth, works hard every day to successfully carry out his selfless vision of bringing education to this community. We appreciated the fact that Saveth gave the teaching jobs to local university students studying education, and us volunteers were there to assist the teachers and provide native (or near-native) pronunciation. The teachers were amazing, but still open to trying new activities or ideas to better engage their students. Not only that, but the teachers welcomed us warmly and were excited to share their culture with us (including foods like young mango with chili salt- Yum!). As far as the students, they are also fantastic. They greet you every day with grinning faces and an eager "Hello!" What makes you excited to go to the school every day is that these students are truly excited to be there learning!
Although the homestay option wasn't available when we were there, it was easy to find a guesthouse in nearby Battambung for our stay (bonus was that they had bikes for rent we could use to ride to KNGO). This was another special part of the experience, as we got to explore the city, meet local people, and try some delicious food.
If you're looking to volunteer, or even if you're just looking to travel, you should definitely go to KNGO for a rewarding and culturally-enriching experience! -Andrea & Robert Weiss
